Abnormal Liver Function

In addition to internal bleeding, the drug Xarelto® may cause another serious side effect: severe liver injury. In 2014, the the medical journal JAMA Internal Medicine published the article “Symptomatic Hepatocellular Liver Injury With Hyperbilirubinemia in Two Patients Treated With Rivaroxaban”, which connected the anticoagulant drug Xarelto® with severe liver injury.

The article identified two patients who experienced severe liver injury onset during treatment with the oral anticoagulant Xarelto®. What is more, according to the article, between 2008 and 2013, 42 cases of liver injury possibly associated with Xarelto® treatment were reported to the Swiss Agency of Therapeutic Products.

In conclusion, the doctors behind the article determined that treatment with Xarelto® can be associated with severe, symptomatic liver injury. They cautioned physicians to be aware of this severe Xarelto® side effect. Moreover, the doctors who published the article recommended “rapid discontinuation of treatment with [Xarelto®] in case of symptomatic liver injury and, taking into account its severity, avoiding reexposure.” Finally, the doctors believe that “a warning about symptomatic liver injury should be included in the drug labels.”

Symptoms of Abnormal Liver Function

The liver’s primary function is to filter blood that comes from the digestive tract, at which point it passes the blood to the rest of the body. Furthermore, the liver is responsible for producing proteins that play a vital role for blood clotting and other functions. When the liver is damaged, it obviously does not function as well as it should. This can cause serious health issues, including lack of brain function, immune system malfunction, hypertension, and increased risk for bruising.

Common symptoms of liver damage include:

  • Discolored stool and urine
  • Yellowing of the skin
  • Swelling of the abdomen, ankles and feet
  • Bruising
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea and vomiting

If you experience any of these symptoms while taking Xarelto®, it is important to reach out to your doctor.
